Handheld gaming PCs have gone from a curiosity to a crowded category in three years. Spec sheets now read like laptop brochures, and it is easy to get lost comparing teraflops and wattage. After testing every major model that has crossed our desk, we have found that the numbers that decide whether you will enjoy one are rarely the ones printed biggest.

1. Weight and balance come first

Anything above 650 grams starts to strain the wrists during a long session, especially lying down. Balance matters as much as mass: a device that carries its weight in the grips feels lighter than one that is top-heavy. If you can, hold one before you buy.

2. Battery life at realistic settings

Manufacturers quote battery life for undemanding games at low brightness. In our tests, most handhelds deliver between ninety minutes and two and a half hours on modern 3D games. Look for reviews that test at a consistent 15-watt power target and 60 percent brightness, which is how we test.

3. The screen you will stare at for hours

A 7 or 8-inch display at 1200p is the sweet spot. Higher resolutions look sharper but cost frame rate and battery. Variable refresh rate is worth more than raw resolution because it smooths out the dips that every handheld suffers in demanding games.

4. Software is the real differentiator

The best hardware can be let down by clumsy menus, unreliable sleep and resume, or a launcher that fights you. Check how well the device handles suspend, whether controller settings can be changed per game, and how often the maker ships updates.

5. Things you can safely ignore

  • Peak benchmark numbers at maximum power, which drain the battery in under an hour.
  • RGB lighting, which is invisible when you are holding the device.
  • Storage size, as long as there is a fast microSD slot.

Our testing process

Every handheld we review goes through a standardised battery rundown, a two-hour comfort session, thermal readings on the grips and back, and a week of everyday use. You can read more in our editorial policy.
