Paper Lantern Road opens with a funeral and a van. Mei, a Tokyo office worker, and her younger sister Sora have not spoken in four years. Their late father has left them one request: scatter his ashes at twelve places he loved, from the northern tip of Hokkaido to a lighthouse in Kyushu.

A relationship drawn with care

What follows is less about the places than the people. The sisters argue, bargain and slowly remember why they used to be close. The writing is specific and unforced. Arguments start over parking and end somewhere much deeper, and the show trusts silence more than most dramas dare.

Twelve places, twelve moods

Each episode is anchored to a location, and the art team clearly visited them. Snowbound harbours, summer festivals and rain-soaked mountain passes all look distinct and lived in. It is one of the most beautiful shows of the year without ever feeling like a travel brochure.

The minor detours

Episodes four and five slow the momentum with a subplot that does not quite connect to the rest. It is a small misstep in an otherwise tight season.

Final verdict

Essential viewing

Paper Lantern Road is the rare drama that feels completely honest. Season two cannot come soon enough.
