Keep in mind

  • Episodes three and four sag

The first season of Meridian Street was a small, clever mystery about a mapmaker who finds a street on an old survey that does not exist. Season two takes that premise and runs with it, sending the characters across the country in search of more impossible places.

A wider canvas

The expanded scope could easily have diluted the show, but the writers keep the focus tight. Each new location reveals something about the characters as well as the mystery, and the season’s structure, alternating between present-day investigation and archival flashbacks, is handled with real skill.

The middle stretch

Episodes three and four slow down noticeably, spending time on a subplot that never quite justifies itself. It is the only real misstep, and the final two episodes more than make up for it.

Final verdict

A worthy follow-up

Meridian Street season two is bigger, bolder and still deeply human. It is one of the best mysteries on television this year.
