Most home skin scanners suffer from the same weakness: take two readings a minute apart and you get two different answers. The Dermaphase is the first we have tested that produces consistent, repeatable numbers, which is the only thing that makes this kind of device useful.

Accuracy and consistency

We took five consecutive readings from the same spot, twice a day, for four weeks. The Dermaphase’s hydration readings varied by less than four percent between consecutive scans, compared with fifteen percent or more for rival devices.

The app

The companion app focuses on trends rather than daily scores, which is exactly right. It shows how your skin changes week to week and flags patterns, such as dehydration after long flights, without pushing products from any particular brand.

Downsides

The texture score becomes unreliable in low light, and the device only earns its keep if you use it at the same time every day. At $179, it is a lot to spend on a gadget that some people will stop using after a month.

Final verdict

The best of a young category

If you love data and routines, the Dermaphase is the home skin scanner to get. Everyone else can safely skip the category for now.
