The best sunscreen is the one you will wear every single day, which means texture, finish and comfort matter as much as the SPF number. Our Beauty Lab panel tested nineteen new formulas across six weeks of summer to find the five that deliver high protection without the greasy film, white cast or stinging eyes.

How we chose

Twelve panel members covering a range of skin types and tones wore each sunscreen daily for at least one week. They rated texture, finish, white cast, comfort, eye sting and wear under makeup. We only considered broad-spectrum formulas, and we buy every product ourselves.

Frequently asked questions

Is SPF 50 much better than SPF 30?

SPF 30 filters around 97 percent of UVB rays and SPF 50 around 98 percent. The bigger difference comes from applying enough and reapplying regularly.

Mineral or chemical sunscreen?

Both protect well. Mineral formulas tend to suit sensitive skin, while modern chemical filters usually feel lighter. Choose the one you will wear every day.

Do I need sunscreen indoors?

If you sit near windows for long periods, yes. UVA rays pass through most glass.
