Encapsulated retinal, a form of vitamin A wrapped in microscopic carriers that release it gradually, is showing up in a wave of autumn launches. Brands say the technology delivers the benefits of retinal with less of the redness and flaking that put many people off.

Why retinal, and why capsules?

Retinal sits one step closer to the skin’s active form of vitamin A than retinol, which is why it is often described as faster acting. That potency can also make it harder to tolerate. Encapsulation slows release so the skin receives the active over hours rather than all at once.

What to expect from new launches

  • Lower starting strengths designed for nightly use from day one.
  • Formulas paired with soothing ingredients like panthenol and ceramides.
  • Airless pumps to protect the active from light and air.

Our Beauty Lab will be testing the most promising launches over the next two months.
