Massage guns range from $50 to more than $500, and their spec sheets are full of numbers that are easy to misread. After testing more than twenty models, we have found that four specifications do most of the work in separating good guns from forgettable ones.

1. Amplitude

Amplitude is how far the head travels with each stroke. Deeper amplitude, around 12 to 16 mm, reaches larger muscle groups more effectively. Compact guns often sit around 8 to 10 mm, which feels lighter and suits smaller areas.

2. Stall force

Stall force is how much pressure you can apply before the motor stops. A low stall force means the gun gives up the moment you lean into a tight muscle. For most people, anything above 20 kg is plenty.

3. Noise

A loud massage gun is one you will not use in front of the TV. The quietest models we have tested run at around 45 decibels at medium speed, roughly the level of a quiet conversation.

4. Weight and grip

You will be holding it at awkward angles to reach your back and shoulders. Under 900 grams is ideal for regular use, and an angled or triangular handle makes a real difference.

The bottom line

For most people, a mid-range gun with 12 mm amplitude, a quiet motor and a comfortable handle is the best balance. Extra attachments and app connectivity are pleasant but rarely essential.
